Life & Death in the Garden

Love Letters to the Earth

A collaboration with Elk Run Farm. These 3 by 4 foot, mixed media collages on birch plywood are inspired by the regenerative farming practices of Elk Run Farm, and the use of compost in their beautiful farm forest garden.

Artist Statement: In the regenerative garden, both death and life are sacred. Bones rest by the dandelions edge, the compost feeds new growth, and death provides richness for life - an inseparable, nourishing circle. When I create art, it starts with a seed in my mind, sprouting in relationship with the world. I collect tools and sit in a quiet state, where patience and delight are my guides. I cut, shape, arrange, and glue. These images then grow to be printed on wood, to be a kind of harvest for the eye.

“In the garden, the door is always open to the holy—growth, birth, death. Every flower holds the whole mystery in its short cycle. In the garden we are never far away from death, the fertilizing, good, creative death.” - Mary Sarton
